What is SS31?
SS-31 (also known as Elamipretide or MTP-131) is a member of the Szeto-Schiller (SS) family of mitochondria-targeted peptides. It is a tetrapeptide (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2) that selectively concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it interacts with cardiolipin — a phospholipid critical for mitochondrial function and electron transport chain efficiency.

Mechanism of Action
SS-31 binds to cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane, stabilising its structure and preventing its peroxidation. This interaction preserves the cristae architecture essential for efficient ATP production and reduces the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Research has shown SS-31 can restore mitochondrial function in aged or damaged cells, making it a key tool for mitochondrial biology and cardiovascular research.
